He was a member of the National Guards of Walton County - 416th "Joe Brown Guards" David also listed as Shelmeth age 52, farmer, born SC, in 416th "Joe Brown Guards" when Sherman threatened in December 1863 & early 1864. The Guards were ordered to report. Many of the men were sick , diseased and in bad health, so only a few were available.- Jacob, 49, farmer, born SC, bad health; Henry 56, born GA, badly diseased; James 34, born GA, badly diseased. All members of 416th Joe Brown Guards.
