John P. Shellnutt, Private, March 4, 1862. Company "G" 40th Reg, Army of Tennessee, Georgia Vol Inf, Haralson Co, GA "Haralson Defenders" -- (John Pink added two years to his age to enlist. He was 16 days short of age 16 He had James H. Shelnutt to vouch for his age.). Captured at Vicksburg, Miss, July 4, 1863, and Paroled July 6, 1863. Wounded at Resaca, GA, May 14, 1864. Pension records show he was captured at Dalton, Ga. July 1864, and sent to Alton, Ill. and released March 7, 1865. Born in Ga. Apr 19, 1844.(Army Record)
