(History of Habersham Co- Plaintiff in court case 1820, from Franklin Co GA).
Andrew moved his family two miles below Fairburn, GA, on White Water Creek in Fayette Co, 1822 (County formed 1821) Most of his descendants were surveyed into Campbell County, when it was formed (1828), and many there when Fulton Co was surveyed from Campbell Co in 1853. He had property in Fayette Co, Elbert Co (Shelnut Grant), and Houston Co on Tax Records of Fayette Co 1823 and 1824. In 1827, property was in name of (widow) until 1834, and Elizabeth was also agent with property in Troup Co. naming Thomas and William Shelnut, sons that moved to Alabama, abt 1838.. Some of property in Troup Co in name of Susan. (dau). William also had property in several counties, on 'Tax Records' of Fayette Co before he left for Alabama.
(Researcher--Shelnut grant made in Wilkes- 500 acres) Many there were from
pensions of Rev. War. Property sold to Michael M Farmer Deed Book S-W 1820-1835, page 176, property on Shelnut Cold Water Creek, James Shelnutt Witness, Rec'd 8 Mar 1828. (No further info on property).

lands from Cherokee Indian cession May 31, 1783, and Creek Indian cession
Nov 1, 1783. An original Georgia County with county 'Seat' at Carnesville.]
Andy had the only Shellnut family known in (Franklin Co) GA before 1822. Elizabeth's family was in that county, where she had a child listed as born there 1809, but in SC on census 1810. His first son John George, Sr. born 1798 in SC (thought by many to be father of Joseph S. Shelnut b. Franklin Co Sep 1820) had
a short marriage there, before going to Surry Co, NC before 1819. Habersham Co Court case is pertaining to dau of Andrew, (Rebecca, b.1800), victim of B&E, Assault, and Rape in Habersham Co.(Court Case 1820).

William Shelnutt (Andy's brother) was in Surry Co, NC, 1820c, with Andy's son John and two other (unknown) Shelnut families in 1820 census. William & family came to Habersham Co with a wagon train in 1822, and went to Walton Co.
The unidentified families, Benjamin & Richard Shelnut (1820c Surry Co, NC)
have not been found in 1830c etc, and thought to have changed names. They
could have another spelling, not recognized.

General Notes (Husband)

Andy and Elizabeth had one son and one daughter under age 5, in 1800c Abbeville, SC
He and son William had several transactions on Tax Digest, Franklin Co. Both had property on Merier Creek, where Andy purchased 100 acres in 1813, and son, William, bought property in 1819.
He an Elizabeth had six daughters and seven sons before he left Franklin Co 1822, going to Fayette Co (formed 1821), two miles below Fairburn, on White Water Creek.
Statements from relatives that Andrew and Elizabeth were buried at Antioch Cemetery, Campbell Co. -- Campbell Co borders were from Fayette County, and including Douglas, Paulding, Bartow, Fulton, and 'Old' Milton Co (Alpharetta), (Note--A very old cemetery is located on Hwy 92, between Marietta and Dallas, Georgia, name "Antioch'). This could be the cemetery, as research has all been near Fayette County. The property of Andrew,
bought in Fayette county, surveyed to Campbell 1828, then Carroll, and then Douglas Co..
The property could well have been located again in Campbell, or Fulton, as many Shelnut families were later in that area.
Part of this cemetery, like many others, could have been destroyed with building 92 Hwy, before the survey was completed. Paulding Co. Library does not show the names in the cemetery survey.

General Notes for Child Nathaniel A. SHELNUTT-[205]

Census 1850: Nathaniel age 27 and Lucy 29 He was born 1822 Franklin Co, GA.??
He and his children gave his birth in South Carolina in 1880c -- His dad was listed
Pendleton Dist. SC 1820 census, but his g-mother Gentry lived in Franklin Co, GA
He and Lucy had 6 children (one dead) by 1850. Nathaniel and his family listed 1880 copy of census "SHULMITT" (Read/copied wrong by some genealogy Researcher). The original sheet reads 'Shelnutt'.
Nat wrote a genealogy of Shelnut Family, shortly before he died. His work was "Up-dated in 1940 (see Luther H. Shelnut, b. 1873, g-nephew of Uncle Nat Shelnut".

Up-date, added by Clarence Borden Shelnutt in 1963, while he was Director' at George Sherman University Union, Boston, Mass. --- The mystery of which State
John Shelnut immigrated into and what happened to the eldest son, George has
been cleared. Descendants of George, from Nova Scotia are living in the Andover,
Mass. area, and shown me his discharge papers from the British Army. He arrived
in Nova Scotia 1893, reimbursed for his loss and given a grant of property. The
discharge papers show the family was in South Carolina.

Carol Stafford Forbes is doing research on Nathaniel Shelnutt and Bowden, Georgia.
She forwarded the work she has completed on Shelnut families, to me. There is lots of information in my file, but am waiting, hoping she will put up her own web site. At
present am unable to reach her.
