THE BOWDON LIBRARY, Section B, page 1, in addition to being source of many Deeds and transactions of Grants, also provided a copy of a letter, dated 01, December 1898, from Nathaniel Shelnutt to daughter, Mary Jane S. Hood:
Dear Daughter and family,

I have been thinking about what I should say if I could be with you Christmas
and make you a speech. I know I should tell you something about our ancestors.
I know I should enjoy being with you.

I want you to read it to the children. Add as much to it as you think of. You know the rest ot the family better than I do. After your Christmas dinner, call them together. Tell them you got a letter from Grandpa that you will read to them, if they desire to hear it. Tell them if I was there to talk to them I would tell them:
The way to be happy is to be good. It is not enough to just do no harm, but there is always opportunity of doing good in some way to or for somebody. Do some kind act or speak a kind word to relieve the suffering of body and mind. Make everybody happy around you as far as is in your power.
Let no opportunity pass to do good. Far remember, once time has passed it never returns. The moment that is lost is lost forever.
The work that is assigned for you to do, you must do it yourself. No one else
can do it for you. Every day you live, new duties and trials present themselves
to you. Study to find your duty, then delight in performing it. Study to make preparation to meet the battle of life in all its trials, its disappointments, and
enjoy its pleasures.
Lovingly,
Your father (Nathaniel III)

He and Lucy had 6 children (one dead) by 1850. Nathaniel and his family listed 1880 copy of census "SHULMITT" (Read/copied wrong by some genealogy Researcher). The original sheet reads 'Shelnutt'.
Nat wrote a genealogy of Shelnut Family, shortly before he died. His work was "Up-dated in 1940 (see Luther H. Shelnut, b. 1873, g-nephew of Uncle Nat Shelnut".

Up-date, added by Clarence Borden Shelnutt in 1963, while he was Director' at George Sherman University Union, Boston, Mass. --- The mystery of which State
John Shelnut immigrated into and what happened to the eldest son, George has
been cleared. Descendants of George, from Nova Scotia are living in the Andover,
Mass. area, and shown me his discharge papers from the British Army. He arrived
in Nova Scotia 1893, reimbursed for his loss and given a grant of property. The
discharge papers show the family was in South Carolina.

Carol Stafford Forbes is doing research on Nathaniel Shelnutt and Bowden, Georgia.
She forwarded the work she has completed on Shelnut families, to me. There is lots of information in my file, but am waiting, hoping she will put up her own web site. At
present am unable to reach her.
