after 1900 census). Barney's Bible listed parents as 'Jack Shelnutt' and wife Rosalie Florence [Walker or Richardson]. Barney, Sr. known to have contacted a family connection in Alabama. He was also in touch with a sister,[ Lenora S. Chambers, wife of Malcom] living in Memphis, TN, but connection was lost.

Brenda Ann was the only child born at the hospital. Born pre-mature, and so small she
looked like a smal bird. The doctors did not expect her to live. The family put hot-water bottles and pillows in a dresser draw, with her between them and fed her from an eye-dropper. She became a normal healthy girl.
