General Notes for Child Luther Hughes SHELNUTT-[1838]
Shelnut Genealogy by/ Uncle Nathaniel b. 1822 - abt 1900, updated twice;--
Luther updated genealogy on Shelnutt's 1940 and 'Notes' were added by Clarence Borden in 1952. ------ John Shelnutt, came from Germany sometime before the Revolutionary War of 1776, settled in either Virginia or one of the Carolina's. The name then being spelled Shellnut or Dutch 'Schelnute', but was spelled Shelnut for a long while. It is now spelled with two t's.
John had five (5) sons and two (2) daughters:
George and Thomas were old enough to go into the War of '76. George was taken prisoner, carried to Nova Scotia, and never returned. He never married , raised no children, left no heirs, was rich, but what became of his property has never been found out. ***** UPDATE*********
Since coming to New England in 1943, I have located the family of the missing George Shelnutt.. He did live in Nova Scotia for many years, however, he did marry and had a family of several children. I have met members of the family and they may now be found in North Andover, Mass.
Having seen the original discharge papers of George Shelnutt, it is now my belief that the family settled first in the Carolinas, since his discharge contained the seal of the state of South Carolina and not Virginia. C.B.S. ***
Thomas --- Dropped dead on a horse in the army.
Henry --- Married Miss Mary Bell and settled in Edgefield Dist., South Carolina, where they both lived until they died. They never moved, never had any children. They had property but the Bell family got it all. [ Note - siblings got property)
William ---married Rachael Ferguson, settled in Walton Co, GA and had 7 sons and two daughters Etc.--
Andrew --fifth son, married Elizabeth Gentry and settled first in Edgefield, SC, then
moved to Franklin Co, GA, where the children were born, then moved to Fayette Co, settled on White Water Creek, two miles from Fairburn, where he died age 60.
Barbara --daughter of John, married Robert Bell, brother to Mary Bell, Sister-in-law.
Katy ---Married a man whose name was Moore
(No record of Katy, daughter, found in my research. Could have been born aboard ship, during immigration, but she was not present at disposal of John's property) .
(Note) Two Cathy Shelnut families listed in 1890 census, (Heads of family)..
